Nadia and Carol

Nadia Comaneci is a Romanian gymnast (born 12 November 1961, in Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej (now Onestiin Gheorghe Gheorghiu dej, now Onesti Romania). She was first to achieve a perfect 10 in an Olympic event. Bela Karalyi was introduced to Comaneci at age six. She would later become Romania's gymnastics coach. The first time she competed was at the National Junior Championships where she placed 13th in 1969. In the year 1970, she won. In 1972, at a meet of communist countries juniors before the Olympics, she took home three gold medals. After that, in 1973 and 1974 she won the overall junior champion. The athlete won four golds and one silver in her first international competition for seniors, held in 1975. This was the first time she competed as an older senior. She was the winner of the American Cup in New York City in 1976 and became the first woman in history to complete a backward double salto as a dismount from the uneven bars that are parallel. She began her career by joining her sister Nina Wayne to perform in Ice Capades, a traveling show of entertainment. The show featured dramatic ice skating shows.
